Welcome Back!

I hope everyone had a great summer!  It is great to see some familiar faces in our room, as well as many new ones.  Every year, I think it is so amazing how much the students change over the summer.

The students have been very hard at work, becoming familiar with our routines and procedures, getting to know each other, resurrecting all of the information and skills from last school year.

This year's motto:  Work hard, play hard!

(Sometimes it's difficult to tell the difference between the two!)

Math- Factors, Factors, Factors

It's time to multiply!  We are starting the year with a heavy focus on basic multiplication facts.  The students are reviewing factors using arrays and factor "T-Charts", writing number models, prime numbers, as well as a general skill review from last year.
If your child does not know basic multiplication facts, please practice these at home.  Flashcards work, but there are tons of really good math games and websites that practice these facts and many other math skills.  A couple of my favorite sites are http://www.mrnussbaum.com and http://www.ixl.com/ (basic facts are under fourth grade category).

Reminders

-  Harrison collects Box Tops, Campbell soup labels, used eyeglasses, and spent ink cartridges

-  5th graders from Riley's class will exit out of the north doors after school.  Arrangements need to be made to meet siblings outside after school in order to help control traffic inside the building.  Middle and high school students are not to be on the property until 3:40, and should not enter the building.

- Please make sure your child has a backpack every day for school.

-  Snacks are allowed at any time of our day, but are required to be healthy!  Drinks other than water are not allowed (this includes flavored water).

Home Projects

This year, as a way to increase student interest and responsibility, we are offering Home Projects to students.  The minimum requirement for the first trimester is 20 projects.  The deadline is the end of the trimester prior to conferences, and an exact date will be given later.  Several projects will be offered each Monday, and it will be the students choice as to which they would like to complete.  Each student will set his/her own project goal, as will keep track of their finished projects in their data folders.  Our hope is that your child will use these projects as opportunities to show you what they are learning, and to interact with you to reinforce what they are doing in class.
